Members of the public in Damak, Jhapa participated in a media literacy circle workshop focused on shared learning held at the Dhaneshwor temple premises, ward 12 here today. The workshop was offered by  Media Foundation with logistics support from the local community.

The majority of the 36 participants included women. They focused on the meaning and improtance of media literacy in everyday life, and discussed various topics, including challenges of media users in the local context, and particularly in areas of media content, audience participation, and legal and ethical issues.

Several participants noted the novelty of the program focused on media users at the local level, emphasizing a greater understanding of media and exploring ways to enhance a variety of media skills needed in the contemporary world. They noted that while media access was no longer an issue today, users now need special skills to know the bad media content from the good one, and to use the various forms of media effectively.

Participants in small thematic groups discussed media content/products, media conditions, learning skills, policy and ethical topics.

As part of the workshop, participants also filled out a survey form seeking user perceptions on media literacy needs at the local level.
